Empirical approach to determining the molecular weight distribution of petroleum-based heavy oil using MALDI-TOF analysis |

The matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization–time of flight (MALDI-TOF) analysis method was adopted to investigate the molecular weight distribution (MWD) variation of heavy oil during the visbreaking. The visbreaking of vacuum residue (VR) was carried out at 350 °C, 400 °C and 450 °C. VR products were studied based on MWD obtained by MALDI-TOF analysis. The separation of MWD was carried out in 8 sections and the each area of fraction was calculated. It is studied that the cracking reaction was occurred dominantly even though condensation and polymerization was carried out simultaneously. It was noted that relatively high molecular fractions 3 and 4 were shifted to light molecular fraction 2. The separation method on MWD obtained by MALDI-TOF is the potential analytical tool for investigating the MWD variation of heavy oil. |
