Crystallinity of poly(l-lactic acid) after thermal treatment is known to be affected by the content of d-isomer. Though various methods of evaluating the crystallinity have been known, factor analysis using FTIR absorbance spectra is one of the simplest methods. Using factor analysis of two PLA samples (4032D and 2003D with a d-lactide content of 1.4 and 4.3 wt.-%, respectively) annealed at different temperatures, we have isolated the pure crystalline and pure amorphous-phase spectra of each PLA sample, and the crystalline-phase content was determined quantitatively as a function of annealing temperature. The quantitative analysis of their FTIR spectra through factor analysis enabled us to understand the changes in crystallinity behavior of PLA samples and to identify the appropriate thermal annealing condition to obtain maximum increase in crystallinity.
