A series of acid-base multiblock copolymers based on sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) and polybenzimidazole were prepared for proton exchange membrane(PEM). The SPAES-PBI copolymers consist of sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) and polybenzimidazole as hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments, respec-tively. The multiblock copolymers were synthesized by a coupling reaction between SPAES and hydroxybiphenyl end capped PBI. The properties of copolymer membranes were investigated such as IEC, water uptake, proton conductivity, and fuel cell performance. The membranes presented better dimensional stabilities than NafionTM 212 (Dupont, co.) due to ionic crosslinking between sulfonic acid groups of SPAES and the amine groups of PBI. An increase of sulfonated block length in the multiblock copolymer resulted improved ion exchange capacity and proton conductivity. Especially, the SPAES-PBI (20K-3K) membrane exhibited a proton conductivity of 0.12 S/cm at 25℃ and 100% relative humidity. |
