C-phycocyanin, a natural blue pigment-protein complex, is attracting attention in the biomedical field due to its unique photodynamic activity, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. With the aim to increase its applicability as a photosensitizer, we prepared C-phycocyanin-chitosan (CPC) nanoparticles as photodynamic therapeutic agents. The obtained CPC nanoparticles were successfully prepared and were in the form of spheres with an average size of 308.02 ± 1.86 nm. Due to the intrinsic properties of C-phycocyanin, it was confirmed that CPC nanoparticles produced level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) with increasing laser irradiation time. Furthermore, cell viability of CT26 cells treated with CPC nanoparticles after laser irradiation decreased relatively compared with that of C-phycocyanin. In this regard, the CPC nanoparticles could be further exploited as versatile nanoplatform for photodyanmic therapy. |
