Ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) is one of the most widely used materials. However, applications of EPDM have often been limited because of its low resistance to oil. In this study, polyacrylate copolymers (rP) were synthesized through reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) technique having sulfur units. The rP was melt-mixed with EPDM in a Brabender mixer for a grafting-onto radical transfer process. For comparison, polyacrylate copolymer (fP) without any sulfur units was synthesized. Cured EPDM/fP mixture showed inferior tensile strength and elongation at break values to those of cured EPDM. In contrast, the cured EPDM/rP exhibited high tensile strength and elongation at break values, which were comparable or even superior to those of cured EPDM. Oil resistance test exhibited much improved characteristics of the EPDM/rP than those of EPDM and EPDM/fP. |
