S. platensis NRRL18993 produced more than 14 compounds, all of which are glutarimide-containing polyketides. Genome scanning of Streptomyces platensis unveiled a gene cluster (mgs) for biosynthesis of glutarimide compounds. The cluster encodes a discrete acyltansferases (AT), "AT-less"polyketeide synthases (PKSs), a type II acyl carrier protein (ACP), and an amidotransferase (AMT), an enzyme set that would be required for the biosynthesis of a glutarimide polyketide. These results unambiguously established that the biosynthesis of all these metabolites is governed by single biosynthetic machinery encoded in mgs cluster. The elucidation of biosynthetic process of MGS and DGN A and B could be promise us to create new compounds based on their structures and biological activities through the engineering of their biosynthetic machinery. |
