Basic groups including amine (NH2), carboxyl (COOH), hydroxyl (OH), and phosphonate (P=O(OH2)) were grafted on the silica surface as monolayer structure, namely surface functional groups. Chemical affinity of the groups toward uranyl carbonate species were investigated in terms of sorption kinetic and capacity. The surface charge of the silica were monitored during the interaction and it revealed that uranium carbonate binds with the basic groups via ionic and covalent bonding, respectively. The spectroscopic analysis (XPS, NMR, and FTIR) results indicated that the ligand charge determines the complexation structure of the uranium with functional groups. |
