Carbon nanotube fiber (CNTF) is a hierarchically-structured assembly of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) which possess exceptional mechanical and electrical properties. Ideally, CNTFs are expected to possess the properties comparable to those of individual CNTs, but in reality, CNTFs still have properties that are just a few percent of that of individual CNTs. In this presentation, research efforts devoted for the development of CNTFs with higher strength and electrical conductivity, and the critical findings obtained during undergoing the related research projects since 2014 at KIST Jeonbuk will be introduced. This includes two sub-topics: i) the synthesis of high-quality CNT or CNTF based on the understanding of the effects of gas flow pattern and ii) the fast densification method for high-performance CNTFs. |
