Adsorption characteristics of reactive dye on activated carbon produced from spent coffee grounds |

Water-soluble dyes have been widely used in university laboratories, chemical, pharmaceutical and textile industries. The release of the dyes into water can cause visual discomfort to people and many environmental problems. In this study, biomass based activated carbon were prepared from spent coffee grounds for adsorption of reactive dye. In particular, potassium hydroxide was used for chemical activation. The physico-chemical properties of the prepared activated carbon were characterization by TG, SEM, XRD and N2 adsorption measurements. Adsorption equilibrium studies were carried out in different experimental conditions to investigate the optimum adsorption condition. The adsorption data of reactive dye were then analyzed by the well-known isotherm equations such as Langmuir, Freundlich and Sips. Batch adsorption experiments were also conducted to examine the adsorption kinetics. Furthermore, thermodynamic parameters were calculated to understand the adsorption process behavior. |
