Mussel-inspired, Ethylene Glycol-Derivatized Polydopamine for Antibacterial Coating |

Biofilm that are made up of bacteria can cause severe medical infection and can be crucial problems for the implantable medical devices. The surface modification with non-biofouling materials has been recognized as one of effective approaches to inhibit biofilm formation. Inspired by mussel’s adhesive proteins, we synthesized a dopamine derivative via esterification of oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) with L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA). It is designed to have catechol and amine moieties for one-step, facile coating without any additives. OEG was selected to suppress the surface adsorption of bacteria. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) that has been widely used as a medical material was coated with the dopamine derivative (OEG-DOPA). The bacterial adhesion was investigated with gram-negative E.coli and minimal bacterial adhesion was achieved by oxidative polymerization of OEG-DOPA and catechol-Fe(III) coordination. |
