제목 Polymeric Materials in Fuel Cell Systems
초록 For the last a few decades, researches and developments for fuel cells have been conducted in the field of alternative energy sources for automotives, stationary, power plants, and small electronics. However, the technological drawbacks, such as low stability and high cost of materials and processes have retarded the commercialization of fuel cells. Among them, polymeric materials have been used as an electrolyte and binders. It is also expected that components such as bipolar plate, cartridge, sealing and housing in systems are composed of polymeric materials for low cost and high energy density. In this presentation, I will talk about the current status and significance of polymeric materials for fuel cell systems. Polymer electrolyte membrane is the key components in PEMFC (Proton exchange membrane fuel cell) or DMFC (Direct methanol fuel cell), and its performances and functions need to be maximized in the fuel cell systems. The developments in binder materials are also emphasized for lowering the resistance of MEA (Membrane Electrode Assembly) and the long term stabilities. In addition, polymeric materials for bipolar plate, cartridge, sealing and housing should be developed and optimized with the fuel cell operation conditions such as temperature, fuel, humidity, etc. The technological developments in polymeric materials regarding fuel cell systems will accelerate the commercialization of them by lowering the cost and improving the performacnes.
