There are 9 neutron beam instruments in operation at HANARO. Five instruments are using thermal neutrons with the wavelength of 1 to 3 A, and the other four using cold neutrons with the wavelength longer than 4 A. These include neutron diffractometers, small angle neutron spectrometers (SANS), neutron reflectometers, and neutron imaging. The applications of these instruments are wide from basic science to industrial application. SANS has applications of microstructure and morphology of nano particle, nano crystalline material and mesoporous material, study on polymers, self-assembly material, structure of proteins, nucleic acids, lipids and carbohydrates, analysis of drug delivery system, and study on a nano precipitate in alloys. There were 500 users in 2011, 20% of them were for energy storage and materials, 19% for magnetism, 16% for steel, 15% for soft materials, 6% for nano materials, 5% for bio materials and so on. |
