Thermosetting epoxy resins are widely used in various industrial fields because of their advantageous properties. However, the flammability of the epoxy resins is one of the major drawbacks in application where high flame retardancy is required. Epoxy resins can be imparted flame retardance by adding flame retardants. In this study, a phosphorus-containing flame retardant, copolymer of spirocyclic pentaerythritol di(phosphate monochloride) and bisphenol S, was successfully synthesized and used as a flame retardant in diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy resins. 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl methane was used as a curing agent, and the weight content of flame retardant was varied from 0 to 20 wt%. The thermal behaviors, such as thermal stability, glass transition temperature, and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), of DGEBA/flame retardant system were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and thermal mechanical analysis (TMA). |
