In order to decrease friction coefficient of the cross-linked polyethylene (CLPE) which is used for artificial hip joint, poly [2-(Methacryloyloxy)ethyl] dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide (PMEDSAH), which is extremely hydrophilic zwitterionic polymer, was grafted on the CLPE via surface-initiated free radical polymerization process. TEM images and XPS spectra showed that PMEDSAH layers were successfully grafted on the CLPE surface. The grafting thickness was increased as each of the experimental conditions increased. Contact angle data showed that the PMEDSAH layers successfully imparted hydrophilicity onto the CLPE surface. The tribo-test and the 3-D confocal microscopy confirmed that the significant decrease of the friction coefficient and wear volume. Throughout these results, we could confirm that the surface immobilization of zwitterionic PMEDSAH could effectively decrease the friction coefficient of the CLPE-surface. |
