Polylactide (PLA) is a biodegradable polyester plastic. PLA can replace petroleum plastics with environmental problems. However, PLA has a difficulty for industrial use because of its low heat distortion temperature and brittle toughness. On the other side, cellulose has high heat resistance and high toughness. In this research, PLA and cellulose are prepared into co-continuous composites. PLA solution (oil phase) and cellulose solution (water phase) were mixed to make an emulsion. The emulsion was frozen by a liquid nitrogen reservoir, and the dried composite was made by a solvent exchange method and freeze drying. In addition, the size of pores and the ratio of PLA in PLA-cellulose composites can be controlled. PLA-cellulose composite foams have better thermal characterization and mechanical properties than the foams of PLA. The new fabrication way of PLA-cellulose can expand the area of commercial use of eco-friendly plastics. |
