Natural nacre, which has delicate hierarchical brick-and-mortar structures with ordinary constituents, exhibits exceptional mechanical strength and toughness. The goal of our research is to mimic the hierarchically arranged nacre structure in order to reproduce its high mechanical performances using our directed assembly techniques. We fabricated biomimetic nanocomposite films between poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and exfoliated nanoclay with locally layered structures by freeze gelation techniques. We also measured the mechanical performances of the film including Young’s modulus, toughness, and ultimate strength. And we analyzed the hierarchical structures by using x-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) image. |
