Preparation and characterization of chitosan/PVA/maghemite composite microcapsules showing dual stimuli-responsive properties |

Novel dual stimuli-responsive microcapsules with both pH-responsive and superparamagnetic properties were successfully prepared and characterized. The chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) interpenetrating polymer network microcapsules were prepared in the presence of maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) nanoparticles by using emulsion polymerization. The shape and structural feature of the microcapsules were studied by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscope. Magnetic characterization of the microcapsules was carried out by magnetometer. The chitosan/PVA/maghemite microcapsules exhibited both time-independent superparamagnetic property with good magnetic-responsive ability and pH-responsive controlled-release property due to the pH-responsive swollen/deswollen characteristics of chitosan. |
