The preparation and characterization of flower like magnetic (Fe3O4, γ-Fe2O3 and α-Fe2O3) iron oxides for heavy metals removal from water |

Heavy metals released into the surface and ground water has attracted much attention for many years because of their increased discharge, acute toxicity and non-degradable nature. In this study, removal of heavy metals from artificially contaminated water has been investigated by flower like iron oxides (Fe3O4, γ-Fe2O3 and α-Fe2O3) nanoparticles. The samples were prepared by using ethylene glycol mediated process followed by altering the calcination conditions. All the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and the morphology was examined by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The FE-SEM images showed that all iron oxides were of 3D flower like shape and approximately 3.6 μm in diameter. Magnetic properties of the as prepared samples were investigated by using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The batch experiments were carried out for the removal of Pb+2, Cr+6 and Cd+2 ions from aqueous solutions by nanoparticles. The results suggested that flower like iron oxides nanoparticles are promising candidate adsorbents. |
