Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) have high intrinsic conductivities, but simple solvent casting and melt blending of MWNTs with polymer matrix have not been highly successful in producing nanocomposites with high electrical conductivity, due to their poor solubility and dispersibility in polymers matrix. To enhance the dispersion properties of MWNTs in polycarbonate matrix, the surface of MWNTs have been chemically modified by non-covalent method. Pyrene, anthracene, naphthalene, and phenyl moieties having similar chemical structures with PC were synthesized and used to functionalize the surface of MWNTs via non-covalent method. PC/non-covalently functionalized MWNT nanocomposites were prepared by both solvent-casting and melt-compounding. It can be expected that as the number of aromatic rings was increased, the dispersion properties of MWNTs in PC matrix could be improved and enhancing the electrical conductivity of PC/functionalized MWNTs. |
