Lithium metal is the most powerful anode in a lithium secondary battery, because it has high theoretical capacity and low redox potential, which enable high energy density. However, lithium metal anode often faces fundamental challenges originating from side reaction of the lithium metal anode with electrolyte as well as growth of lithium dendrites that reduce performance and safety. In this study, we demonstrate performance improvement in lithium metal anode by coating an inorganic material on lithium metal anode. Inorganic coating act as a mechanical protection layer on lithium metal, which has the advantage of suppressing dendrite growth. Not only cycle stability but also surface stability in electrolyte are obtained from the coated lithium metal anode. The suppressed Li dendrite growth under mechanical protection layer was confirmed by SEM observation. As a result, our protection coating layer enhanced electrochemical performance of lithium metal battery. |
