Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite (IPMC), which contains ionic polymer membrane between two electrodes, has relatively light weight, small size, and excellent flexibility. Due to this structure, IPMC can be used as bending actuator when voltage is applied across metal electrodes. In addition, IPMC can be used as bending motion sensor, by the migration of the inner cations due to a mechanical deformation. For developing performance of IPMC sensor, we suggest novel ionic polymer membrane to substitute the commercial Nafion 117 membrane. The membranes were prepared by radiation-grafting of fluoropolymer and polystyrene monomers, and the degree of grafting was controlled by radiation time or radiation dose. By comparing and analyzing these ion-exchange membranes, membrane property such as water uptake, ion exchange capacity (IEC), and ion conductivity were measured. Also, we confirmed their sensing ability as novel IPMC sensor for biomimetic or medical application. |
