제목 Recognition of organic-inorganic hybrid cobalt nanoparticles as non-precious metal catalysts for oxygen reduction
초록 Efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) through effective and inexpensive electrocatalysts is a valuable approach for clean and renewable energy systems. Here, carbon-encapsulated cobalt nanoparticles supported on carbon (Co@C/C) are introduced as non-noble-metal catalyst for ORR. Enhancing ORR activity and improving C-shell sealing are two major challenges in synthesis of Co@C/C catalyst. The Co@C/C are synthesized by thermal decomposition of cobalt precursor in a one-step synthesis. The morphological properties have been observed by transmission electron microscopy. In Co@C/C, few-shell carbon-cage protects the metal nanoparticle from atmospheric-O2-induced degradation and agglomeration of neighboring nanoparticles. Moreover, the nature of the interfacial contact/interactions b/w the metal cores and the carbon shells plays a key role towards optimizing ORR activity. This finding opens new avenues for utilizing active transition metals such as cobalt in a wide range of applications.
