Recently, there has been tremendous interest in high sulfur-content polymers for optical and energy applications due to their high refractive index and high electrochemical capacity. Furthermore, the overproduction of elemental sulfur as byproducts from refining operations makes it an attractive starting material for the preparation of advanced polymers. In spite of such a good potential of elemental sulfur as a starting material for polymer synthesis, methods to prepare well-defined polymers from sulfur or its derivatives are insufficient. Herein, we report a facile method to prepare high sulfur content polymers through the precipitation polymerization. Morphology control of such polymers has been investigated by controlling various factors such as sulfur content of polymers, reaction temperature, and with or the presence of surfactants. Furthermore, electrochemical properties of the polysulfide chains and their feasibility for active cathode material in Li-S batteries are discussed. |
