Natural neural systems in human body have soft mechanical properties. However, most of the artificial neural interfaces have stiff mechanical properties. For these contradictory mechanical properties between natural and artificial systems, several problems are now being faced for long-term neural implants. Thus, we developed a nano- and micro-structured conductive material for soft neural interfaces. PCL based soft membrane with multi-scale nano- and micro-pores was used as a template of conducting materials. This membrane has several advantages such as mechanical softness, biocompatibility, selective permeability. Using this soft template, we further modified the membrane with electroactive coatings by LBL assembly of SWCNTs, PEDOT, and polyelectrolytes. These nano-stuctured SWCNTs and PEDOT could enhance ionic signal transmission and cell-to-cell interactions along the micro-structured PCL membrane. Thus, our novel conducting materials can be used for soft neural interfaces. |
