Side chain type oligo(oxyethyelne) surfactant polymers, poly(oxyethylene)s containing decyl-oligo(oxyethylene) amphiphiles in the side chain was prepared via polymer analogous reactions to induce novel high molecular weight nonionic amphiphilic materials. The poly(oxyethylene)s containing decyl-oligo(oxyethylene) side groups showed only a side chain crystalline phase. The complexes of poly(oxyethylene)s containing decyl-tri(oxyethylene) and lithium perchlorate showed thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior, while those of poly(oxyethylene)s containing decyl-mono(oxyethylene) and decyl-di(oxyethylene) with lithium perchlorate did not have any lquid crystalline phases. The mesomorphic properties of the complexes of poly(oxyethylene)s containing decyl-tri(oxyethylene) and lithium perchlorate were studied using differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, and polarized optical microscopy. |
