제목 | Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Polyimides from 3,6-Bis[4'-(n-alkyloxy)biphenyl-4-oxy]pyromellitic Dianhydrides |
초록 | In recent years liquid crystal display (LCD) devices have become the most important technology for flat panel displays. It is known that the key technology of LCD devices lies at uniform alignment and high pretilt angle of LCs to achieve their excellent electro-optical performances. Aromatic polyimides are the most common LC aligning layer material currently used in industry, and many attempts have been devoted to develop novel polyimides to give more improved LC aligning ability. In our previous report we have shown that rubbed surfaces of poly{p-phenylene-3,6-bis[4-(n-alkyloxy)phenyloxy]pyromellitimide}s align LCs perpendicular to the rubbing direction and exhibit controllable and unusually high pretilt angles.1 In this study new pyromellitic dianhydride monomers having both flexible n-alkyloxy branches and biphenylic LC moity at 3- and 6-position of the pyromellitic ring are prepared and polycondensated with commercially available aromatic diamines by the common two-step method. The monomers have been synthesized starting from durene through a number of consecutive reactions including bromination, oxidation, protective imidization, nucleophilic substitution and deprotection. Chemical and morphological structures of the polyimides are characterized by various spectroscopic and X-ray diffractometric means as well elemental analysis and their physical properties are measured and discussed with respect to their chain structure. In continuation of the current results the polyimides will be further studied for their LC aligning ability for the purpose of elucidation of the effect of chain structure upon LC aligning behaviors.
