Controlled Synthesis of Polymer Brushes onto Nano-Silica |

Alkoxysilane-functionalized polyisoprene was synthesized in advance for grafting polymer brush onto silica particle using 'grafting onto' method. Over 90% functionalization yield was obtained when using tetrapropyl orthosilicate(TPOS) as a chain-end functionalization agent. The concentration was in the ratio of 5:1 of [TPOS] and [Li]. The range of molecular weight of polymer brushes onto silica particle were 2,000~10,000g/mol, respectively and the grafting weight percent of polymer brush were 20% and 40~50%, respectively. The surface characterizations of the synthesized particle with polymer brush were analyzed by SEM. The molecular weights and the molecular weight distributions of the synthesized polymer brushes were measured using GPC. The microstructures and the compositions were characterized by 1H-NMR. TGA was used to confirm the grafting weight of polymer brush. |
