Tailoring heterogeneous nanostructures in polymer thin films by external electric fields. |

Controlling microstructure of nanomaterials via chemical (interfacial engineering) and physical (external field) means has become one of the most interesting and challenging topics. The interaction based on the interfacial interaction under electric field were employed to obtain heterogeneous nanostructures in polymer thin films. In this study, the effect of nanoparticles on the microdomain orientations in block copolymer/nanoparticle thin films under electric field was investigated. It was found that the microdomain orientation of block copolymer/nanoparticle thin films under electric field was suppressed by the introduction of gold nanoparticles. Importantly, it was revealed that microdomain orientations along the field direction are promoted by tailoring surface ligand groups on nanoparticles under external electric fields. The possibility for complete alignment normal to the substrate was illustrated. Finally, the possibility for the realization of a unique embossed carbon nanostructure was examined. This work can provide fundamental data for understanding the behavior of nanostructures in polymer thin film under electric fields. |
