Thermal and Rheological Properties of Polyolefin Based Ionomers Containing clay |

Maleated polypropylene (MPP) and maleated ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (MEPDM) were neutralized to prepare polyolefin ionomers using KOH and ZnO by extrusion at 180℃ and 210℃ respectively. It was observed that the cooling crystallization temperature of the ionomer based on MPP or MEPDM increased while the degree of crystallinity was lowered with increasing the degree of neutralization of the polyolefins. We tried to disperse organic modified clay(Cloisite 20A) in the polyolefinic ionomers prepared. Polyolefin ionomer/clay (80/20 by wt) composites showed exofoliated morphology of clay. Large increase of viscosities and mechanical properties of the composits was observed. It is postulated that ionic moieties introduced in the polyolefins enhance dispersion of clay and mechanical properties of the composites.
