Biofouling defined as adherence and accumulation of biotic deposits on surface of membrane brings about decline of water flux and increase of energy consumption. It reduces membrane performance and lifetime. In order to suppress biofouling, much effort has tried to modify of membrane surface such as introduction of hydrophilic polymer, charge or antibacterial particle. In this study, anti-biofouling membrane was prepared by covalent assembly of silver nanoparticles with broad spectrum antibacterial activity on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. First, PVDF membrane was modified with thiol group known as binding silver. Next, the thiol-modified membrane was immersed in colloidal silver nanoparticle solution. The prepared membranes were analyzed by field emission-scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Furthermore, bio-fouling resistance of the resulting membrane was evaluated using E. coli as a bio-foulant. |
