Zinc bromine redox flow battery (ZBB) is advantages in high energy density from the high cell potential (1.83 vs. SHE) and in cost effective due to low-cost redox couple materials. However, ZBB has not made significant progress in market penetration, owing to its low efficiency as well as low operating current density mainly caused by mismatching of positive and negative reaction rate. Therefore, it is important to improve electrochemical activity of the Br2/2Br- redox reaction and to reduce electrochemical polarization of ZBB. In this study, we prepared potassium introduced carbon paper (K-CP) electrode by a combination of KOH solution treatment and thermal treatment. The K-CP electrode enhances the amount of surface oxygen functional group as well as uniformly dispersed potassium on the carbon paper. This K-CP electrode shows higher Br2/2Br- electrochemical reaction properties as well as improved single cell performance than that of conventional carbon paper as a cathode. |
