Efficient photo-induced thiol-ene click chemistry for the preparation of polyols with primary hydroxyl groups was examined employing vegetable oils (VOs), such as castor oil and soybean oil. Experimental parameters, such as concentrations of chemicals, reaction time, and reaction temperature, were carefully optimized to improve reaction efficiency and to control the structural characteristics of the resulting polyols. 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, GPC, titration, and MALDI-TOF were employed to investigate the characteristics of the polyols. The resulting VO-based polyols were successfully incorporated into thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs). The thermal and mechanical properties of the TPUs were also compared with those of traditional TPUs from petroleum based polyols. |
