The ionic groups were located at the end of the chain(called terminal ions) to obtain a high solid content with a minimum concentration of ionic group, and results have been compared with those in soft segments(soft ions) in terms of Z-potential, particle size, contact angle, water swell as well as tensile properties. The terminal ions were dispersed with less amount of ionic groups compared with those in soft and hard segments because of great mobility and low surface free energy of the chain ends. The ionic groups on the chain end provided the particle with more hydrophilic surfaces and hence much less water was used for stable dispersion, leading to decreased thickness loss upon drying, and much greater contact angle with water compared with those in soft and hard segments. Notably, the ionic groups on the chain end gave smaller particle and high solid content as well. |
