Conjugated Ionic Polymer with Side-Chain Liquid Crystalline Moieties |

Conjugated ionic polymer system from acetylene derivatives have potential as materials for mixed ionic and electronic conductivity, energy storage devices such as batteries and permselective membrane, and light-emitting devices, due to the their extensive conjugation and various functionalities. The conjugated ionic polymer with liquid crystalline (LC) moiety was prepared by the activated polymerization of 2-ethynylpyridine using the LC-alkyl bromide at elevated polymerization temperature. The color of the reaction solution changed from light brown of the initial mixture of 2-ethynylpyridine and LC alkyl bromide into dark black. The polymer structure of the resulting polymer was characterized by elemental analysis, NMR, infrared, and UV-visible spectroscopies. The polymers were completely soluble in DMF, DMSO. N,N-dimethylacetamide, formic acid, etc. The photoluminescence peak is located at 430 and 454 nm corresponding to the photon energy of 2.8 and 2.66 eV. |
