Pyrolysis of R-22(monochlorodifluoromethane) over metal fluoride based catalysts |

Monochlorodifluoromethane (CHClF2, R-22 or HCFC-22) has been used as a raw material for the manufacture of valuable fluorinated compounds such as tetrafluoroethylene (C2F4, TFE) and hexafluoropyropylene (C3F6, HFP). However, R-22 is a controlled substance under the Montreal protocol because of stratospheric ozone depletion potential. It has to be phased out by 2030 in developed countries. TFE has been prepared by the non-catalytic pyrolysis of R-22 at temperature ranges of 750-950℃. In this work, we tried to find an effective catalyst and investigated the catalytic pyrolysis of R-22 over fluorinated metal oxides and metal fluorides. We also compared the catalyzed pyrolysis of R-22 with the non-catalytic pyrolysis. In the pyrolysis of R-22 over Al2O3 catalyst, the transformation of aluminum oxide to aluminum fluoride by the attack of HF produced during the pyrolysis was observed. And the alteration of reactivity as a function of time was also observed. In order to draw a correlation between the catalytic activity and the surface structure in the metal fluoride based catalysts, AlF3 and CaF2 catalysts were introduced in the pyrolysis of R-22 and their effects were studied. |
