Synthesis of Poly(phenylene oxide) Containing Trifluoromethyl Groups via Sequential Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution Reaction |

A new poly(phenylene oxide) containing pendent trifluoromethyl groups (CF3-PPO) was synthesized by nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr) reaction of the monomer containing fluoro and nitro leaving groups (BC type monomer) with hydroquinone (AA type monomer). Based on the leaving and activating characteristics of the nitro group, the polymerization reaction was carried out in a sequential manner-the preferential fluorine displacement reaction followed by the nitro displacement reaction. The polymer (CF3-PPO) having inherent viscosity of 0.32 dL/g was amorphous and dissolved well in a wide range of organic solvents. Tg and 5% weight loss temperature of the polymer were 110 ℃ and 483 ℃ in nitrogen, respectively.
