Opal photonic crystals have been widely employed in materials science for various applications. In this study, we used the anionically charged ZnS/SiO2 microspheres to apply to various photonic applications. Due to the surface charge of ~40mV in water, they were self-assembled within polar solvents and in consequence, they formed opal structures and enabled the diffraction of the specific color of light by Bragg’s law. The charged particles can be utilized as a full color display device by electrically tuning interparticle distances within polar media. For demonstration, we fabricated the opal film of the ZnS/SiO2 microspheres on the glass tiles. Such thin films showed reflective colors by diffracting specific wavelength of light from opal structures. High refractive index of ZnS/SiO2 microspheres enabled strong diffraction of light from opal structure even with inorganic binder at the interstitial spaces. |
