제목 The Effect of Flexible Chain Length on the Macroscopic Properties of Poly(alkylene 2,6-naphthalate)

A number of investigators have been interested in relationship between macroscopic properties such as melting temperature, crystal structure, crystallization rate, and mechanical relaxation behavior and microscopic chain structures. Recently, we have synthesized poly(alkylene 2,6-naphthalate) (P m N, where m indicates the number of methylene groups) with varying lengths (m=2~6) of methylene groups and have investigated their crystal structures and thermal properties. Interestingly, it was found that PmN having even numbers of methylene groups have higher melting temperature and faster crystallization rate than PmN having odd numbers of methylene groups. However, the physical origin of these experimental observations of the odd-even fluctuation on these macroscopic properties of PmN have not been unveiled from the view point of local chain structures. In this study, the highlights of our findings will be presented with putting emphasis on the odd-even effect of flexible chain length on the macroscopic properties such as melting temperature, crystallization rate and mechanical relaxation behavior using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), dynamic mechanical thermal analyser (DMTA) and universal tensile machine (UTM).
