5-methyl-thiophenecarboxaldehyde Schiff base immobilized spherical MCM-41 (TS-MCM-41) nanoparticle was successfully employed for the removal of heavy metal ions from water. The structure and surface properties of the starting and the novel organic-inorganic hybrid mesoporous materials were studied by means of XRD, N2 adsorption/desorption (BET), TGA, DR UV–vis, FTIR and 29Si MAS and 13C CP MAS NMR spectroscopic techniques. The heterogeneous ligand is a promising material for adsorbing heavy metal ions from water even at very acidic solutions. It was found that TS-MCM-41 is active towards Hg2+, Cu2+ and Cr3+ from a mixture of metal ions in water containing Co2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, Hg2+ and Cr3+ ions. |
