Comparison between ARGET ATRP and normal ATRP techniques for the preparation of polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) |

In this work, polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) was prepared through normal atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and activators regenerated by electron transfer (ARGET) ATRP techniques. For ARGET ATRP, polymerizations were carried out with tris[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine (Me6TREN) and N,N,N’,N”,N”-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as ligands, ethyl 2-bromoisobutyrate (EtBrIB) as a initiator and tin(II) 2-ethylhexanoate [Sn(EH)2] as a reducing agent. The influence of ligand structures on the preparation of polystyrene macroinitiators and extended poly(methyl methacrylate) blocks were investigated. The molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of individual blocks in diblock copolymers was also studied by liquid chromatography at the critical point (LCCC).
