The demand of clean fuels such as methanol and ethanol by mixing with gasoline fuel has been increased due to the sharp increase of petroleum price. In general, ethanol was derived from fermentation of biomass and its production is not sufficient because of limited supply of biomass. The one possible way to produce ethanol by catalytic process is the hydrogenation of methyl acetate by forming equimolar ratio of methanol and ethanol products. In addition, since esterification of methanol and acetic acid could simply produce methyl acetate, we have investigated the catalytic activity for esterification reaction on various zeolites such as ZSM-5, Modernite, Ferrierite and Beta-zeolite. All tested solid acid catalysts are found to show excellent activity except for Beta-zeolite to form methyl acetate above 95% selectivity. |
