Electrospinning is an efficient, convenient and low-cost technology for preparation of fibrous materials with very fine diameters. Chitosan (CS), a (1→4)-linked 2-amino-2-deoxy-D-glucopyranose, is a polysaccharide which is the N-deacetylated derivative of chitin. Natural micas are ubiquitous in nature and can be obtained in their mineralogically pure form at a low cost. The net negative layer charge of mica layers is balanced by interlayer K+ ions. The nearly perfect cleavage, which is the most prominent characteristic of mica, is explained by the hexagonal sheet-like arrangement of its atoms. However, chitosan/mica fiber was studied by few researchers until now, leaving its potential suitability for many applications, including as a wound dressing material. The surface morphology and mechanical properties of the fiber was studied by using SEM, AFM, UTM, TGA, DSC. We also compared the antibacterial properties of chitosan/PEO and chitosan/PEO/mica nanofiber mats. |
