Drug-eluting stent (DES) implantation with balloon angioplasty is a widely used treatment for coronary artery diseases. However, balloon angioplasty leads to some cracks on the surface of drug-coated stent. The cracks on the DES cause restenosis and/or thrombosis as long-term outcomes due to incomplete re-endothelialization, irregular drug releasing, and peeling of the coated polymer layer. To prevent these problems, we have optimized the synthetic conditions of DES for preventing crack formation by controlling ratio of biodegradable polymer and drug in the stent coating process. The results showed that the ratio of polymer to drug influenced surface morphology and drug release rate. It is believed that the optimal condition would be a great help in development of new type of DES and effectively improve the problems of conventional DES. |
