Effect of thermal history on the crystallization behavior and chemical structure of polyolefin ketone |

The polyolefin ketone (POK) was synthesized by copolymerization of ethylene and carbon monoxide. The copolymer forms a planar zigzag conformation and possesses excellent mechanical properties. It is regarded as one of the best candidates to substitute conventional engineering plastics. However it is a well known fact that the polymer is very sensitive to heat-treatment. Repeated melting notably reduced the melting temperature of the polymer. Eventually the melting peak disappeared with repetition of the process. This is regarded as the result of condensation reaction leading to branching followed by crosslinking. In this research, we traced the critical temperature and time at which the changes in chemical structure took place and analyzed the physicochemical structure of heat-treated polymer to prove the chemical reaction. |
