TiO2 shows an electrochromic properties when they are electrochemically reduced. However, a color contrast is not strong in the moderate voltage range so that they are limited to the practical device application such as smart windows and rear-view mirrors. Furthermore, a response speed of TiO2 during electrochromic process is required to be highly enhanced for fast switching optical devices. On the other hand, viologen molecules show a strong electrochromic coloration when they are reduced during the electrochemical reaction. Therefore, viologen anchored TiO2 nanoparticles are often used as an electrode for a fast switching electrochromic display. Instead of nanoparticles, incorporation of nanotube structure can enhance the electron transfer in the redox reaction and induce more favorable electrochromic properties. In this study, we fabricated the viologen modified TiO2 nanotube layers Modified TiO2 layers showed stronger electrochromic coloration and faster response speed. |
