Sulfur-Rich Polymer Nanoparticles Obtained from Interfacial Polymerization in Water |

With sulfur and sulfur-containing materials exhibiting an array of desirable properties ranging from high electrochemical capacities to high refractive indices, methods of directly utilizing sulfur in the synthesis of advanced materials is of great interest. Owing to the low solubility of sulfur-rich materials in common solvents, methods of achieving high sulfur-content materials in processable forms are crucial. We herein report the synthesis of well-defined polymer nanoparticles from aqueous sodium polysulfides obtained by dissolving elemental sulfur in sodium sulfide solutions. We demonstrate the polysulfides undergo the interfacial polymerization with 1,2,3-trichloropropane to yield high sulfur-content polymer nanoparticles with narrow size distribution. The effect on the nature of surfactants on the nanoparticles is discussed and the resulting nanoparticles are characterized through elemental analysis, dynamic light scattering, and scanning electron microscopy. |
