In this study, a new polymer electrolyte membrane, which is durable, cheaper in cost and higher in proton conductivity, is prepared. For this purpose, poly(styrene)-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) is first synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization, followed by sulfonation of polystyrene block with an acetyl sulfate. The sulfonated block copolymer (P(S-co-SSA)-b-PMMA) is then blended with poly(vinylidene fluoride) that is miscible with PMMA block of the block copolymer and would be expected responsible for good mechanical and chemical stability. When the blend is cast in solution, the blend is microphase-separated on a nanometer scale. The morphology and the proton conductivity of the membrane prepared in this study are measured as functions of the block copolymer composition and the blend ratio, and discussed in terms of structure-conductivity relationship. |
