Catalytic Conversion of Glucose to Levulinic Acid over Acid-Functionalized Graphene Oxide Catalysts |

Graphene oxide (GO)-based catalysts with sulfonic acid (SO3H) functional groups (GO–SO3H) were utilized for selective decomposition of hexose sugars such as glucose and fructose to levulinic acid (LA), which has been known as important platform chemical for various value-added derivatives. The GO–SO3H catalysts (with 1.7 wt.% of initial feed glucose) gave high yields of around 78% for LA within 2 hrs of reaction time and showed compatibility of reuse with reliable performance. The high catalytic performance of GO–SO3H has been determined to be the result of higher density of Brønsted acid sites in GO, compared with the Lewis acid sites in other AC–SO3H catalysts. The synergetic effect of surface hydroxyl (-OH) group on GO and Brønsted acid sites played important role for the higher conversion of glucose to levulinic acid, which were investigated through protection of hydroxylic groups in GO by Methoxytrimethylsilane (MTS). |
