Synthesis of calcium phosphate powders by electron beam irradiation technique |

Calcium phosphates such as hydroxyapatite (HAp, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2), and tricalcium phosphate (α-/β- TCP, Ca3(PO4)2) are well-known biomaterials due to their similarity to the mineral constituents of human bones and teeth. While there have been many researches on calcium phosphate synthesis, such as through solid state reactions, precipitation, hydrothermal reactions, and sol-gel methods, but they have disadvantages, in that they are time-consuming and have low-quality control and chemical contamination. In this work, calcium phosphate powders were synthesized using a electron beam irradiation technique to investigate the dependence of the results on the pH of the starting solution. Using an aqueous solution containing Ca(OH)2 and H3PO4 (Ca/P ratio = 1.67), calcium phosphate powders were synthesized using a electron beam irradiation technique at 1.14-10 MeV, 0.5-7.46 mA, and 100-500 kGy. The crystal structure and morphology of the synthesized powders were characterized using XRD and FE-SEM techniques. Moreover, a cytotoxicity test was performed for the prediction of in vivo bioactivity of the synthesized. |
