Catalytic Activation of Peroxymonosulfate over Black TiO2 Nanotube Arrays under Solar Light Irradiation |

This study investigated catalytic peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation on black TiO2 nanotubes (black TNAs) under solar light for the efficient oxidation of organic pollutants. Black TNAs with surficial oxygen vacancies significantly enhanced electrical conductivity and provided abundant active sites for PMS activation, which were demonstrated by electrochemical analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Mechanistic studies using probe reagents and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique implied that the switching of the PMS activation mechanism from non-radical mechanism to radical-involved. Black TNAs mediate electrons from organics to PMS in the dark, which enables the oxidation of organic pollutants (i.e., a non-radical mechanism). On the other hand, the irradiated black TNAs/PMS system under solar light produces highly reactive sulfate and hydroxyl radicals through the reductive PMS activation and photocatalytic hole-mediated water oxidation (i.e., radical-involved mechanism). As a result, the black TNAs/PMS system under solar light efficiently oxidized organic pollutants and maintained the oxidation activity during repeated PMS activation cycles. |
